Great issue, and funny you'd have written about Martins, because lately I've been noticing these small dark birds flitting around at dusk, hanging mostly around the treetops... I had never seen anything like them before, but what you described sure sounds right, from the way they dart around and have a streamlined shape to them... so I think you solved a mystery for me :)

I bet you're seeing Tree Swallows. They are very small and eat insects too...
